Overview

Healthcare in India is undergoing systemic digital transformation. In September 2021, the government announced its Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which aims to develop the backbone network necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure of the country. Electronic medical records (EMRs) are a critical component of the mission. Every citizen in India is now being issued a digital health ID that will empower patients to access and share their health records.

HealthPlix Technologies promotes better health outcomes across India with a doctor-first approach and its comprehensive, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven EMR software. About 10,000 physicians currently use the HealthPlix platform across 370 cities in India, with software and built-in support available in 14 languages.

Srinivasa Raghavan Kandala, associate director for engineering at HealthPlix Technologies, says, “EMRs are fundamental in building a digital healthcare foundation in India. With a solid foundation, various market players can co-create for the ecosystem and drive better health outcomes.”

Opportunity | Extending Doctors’ Reach to Remote Areas of India

By using HealthPlix, physicians can set up virtual clinics in their location of choice, including their homes. They can access EMRs via a website or the HealthPlix Spot mobile app, released in April 2022. Doctors can also use HealthPlix to extend their reach to remote locations of the country that are typically underserved by public health systems. As of June 2022, 45 percent of doctors on the platform are from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities of India leveraging HealthPlix to digitise their journey.

All of this can be achieved with no physical investment in hardware, office space, or personnel. “Many of the doctors on our platform are driving large-scale outcomes. We’ve seen cases where one doctor is able to serve a large patient base with our solution,” says Burhanuddin Pithawala, head of Marketing & Operations at HealthPlix. The HealthPlix platform is in English and delivered in 14 languages, eliminating barriers to communication between regions. Doctors can securely conduct online video and audio consultations, which has proven to be a valuable option for patients who are unable to travel to a clinic.

Solution | Leveraging Support and Managed Services for Faster Time-to-Market

To support high-volume storage requirements and access to EMRs from anywhere, HealthPlix decided to take advantage of the cloud. The business launched on Amazon Web Services (AWS), choosing it for the range of services available—specifically those related to databases and analytics—and for the support provided by the AWS Activate program for startups. It is currently using Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for MySQL as a source database for EMRs, a managed service that saves time on administration tasks. The business is also relying on AWS Business Support for architectural guidance.

As part of the AWS Activate program, HealthPlix has connected with AWS solutions architects specializing in architecture for healthcare businesses, with a focus on data privacy and security.

“Our infrastructure support team is very limited, so we leverage support from AWS experts to fine-tune our services or when we run into issues,” Kandala says. “AWS provides scalable infrastructure, and we don’t have to hire people to manage it, which fuels our go-to-market timeline.”

Outcome | Growing 10% Month-on-Month with Scalable Data Architecture

Since its founding in 2016, HealthPlix has grown steadily, particularly during the pandemic and lockdowns that accelerated adoption of virtual healthcare. The startup has been growing steadily 10 percent month on month, a level of scalability only possible with a fully elastic application stack. The business has experienced zero downtime on AWS.

As it has grown, HealthPlix has also built an increasingly robust analytics pipeline, focusing on harnessing data to improve patient outcomes. The startup uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as a data lake, Amazon Redshift as a data warehouse, and Amazon Athena for serverless querying. Internal use cases for the data pipeline include business intelligence to help HealthPlix’s marketing team understand how doctors are using the platform at different stages of the patient journey and determining how many prescriptions are generated per doctor on HealthPlix.

Building Intuitive Interfaces to Simplify Doctors’ Workflows

HealthPlix’s data and analytics architecture also supports patient-centered tools that doctors use to deliver improved healthcare. In October 2021, HealthPlix released its ROBIN analytics tool on the EMR platform featuring a Doctor Insights dashboard. This user-friendly interface tracks critical aspects of patient visits including individual demographics, visit trends, and insights around follow-ups.

Doctors can now easily view a patient’s health and prescription history on HealthPlix and spot patterns of illness over time. This capability helps them identify and better treat patients suffering from chronic disease, with visibility into how patients have responded to treatments.

In addition to holistic health assessments, HealthPlix includes AI engines running in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances that provide clinical decision support to help doctors generate faster, more precise prescriptions. In as little as 30 seconds, doctors can generate an e-prescription on HealthPlix that factors in a patient’s prescription history as well as related patient data.

If a patient regularly sees a doctor on HealthPlix, for example, the doctor can type “Me” in the software and receive suggestions for prescriptions. They would also receive an alert from the AI engine if a prescribed medication could cause an allergic reaction in a patient or should be used with caution when combined with other prescriptions. “We’ve made our software as intuitive as possible so doctors can simplify their workflows, write prescriptions faster, and serve more patients more accurately,” Pithawala says.

Delivering New Value-Added Features on the Cloud

Most recently, the startup released its HealthPlix Spot mobile app to facilitate appointment scheduling and other services between patients and doctors. HealthPlix is also exploring other AWS analytics and machine learning services to roll out more features this year. Explains Kandala, “Our mission is to make life easier for doctors. By leveraging expert help and scalable, smart infrastructure on AWS, we can maintain focus on delivering features that support our mission.”
